Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands have been on my bucket list for the past ten years to photograph and finally I had the opportunity. An archipelago of 18 volcanic islands between Iceland and Norway they are self-governed as part of the Kingdom of Denmark with a total population of 50,000. These islands offer some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery found anywhere in the world. Towering cliffs up to 2,500 feet high are the highest in Europe and some of the highest in the world. The islands are separated by narrow sounds and fjords and filled with waterfalls, lakes, quaint remote villages with turf-roof houses and sheep…sheep…and more sheep everywhere. The weather changes constantly but mostly it is windy, cloudy and cool throughout the year. Our visit to the Faroe Islands was in mid April with average temperatures of 44 degrees and periods of rain, sleet, snow and sun along with very strong winds. There are no trees on the islands and the predominant vegetation is grasslands which had turned to a golden color. Magnificent vistas in every direction.
